From TED Talks, here is a video from Gever Tulley in which he argues that kids learn valuable lessons by being given the freedom to explore potentially dangerous things.
hmmmmm....come to think of it....
my brothers both owned their own pocket Knives at the tender ages of 4 and 6, we all took turns driving the car at every opportunity we could get (even if it was sitting on as many coats as it took to see over the steering wheel) and we simply loved bonfire night...'smores' anyone? And if my mother didn't check the pockets of our pants regularly, screws, nut and bolts were regularly ending up at the bottom of the washing machine!
So as shocking as this blurb was at first, some thought proved that we must have all been living dangerously ... Who Knew? ( And to think, I grew up to be a homeschooler!!! Goes to show that greatness grows from questioning whats considered "normal"!)
