Classical Education Homeschool Group in Mtl?

Hi all!

We have just moved back to Montreal...I grew up here but my husand is American which is where we were living for the last 8 years (Portland, OR). We homeschool our 3 kids ages almost 6, 4 and almost 3. I am looking for a homeschool group located in Montreal that focuses on classical education. If you're not familiar with this style of education, here is a brief explanation of it. It is based on the latin Trivium which is a three part process of learning.

"The Trivium is simply a means of describing the learning stages of children as they mature. Parents often recognize the stages through which their children pass as they mature. The Trivium focuses the educational method to best develop a knowledgeable, thinking, and articulate student. As the name implies, there are three stages represented in the Trivium: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric.

Grammar – Grades K-6

During the Grammar phase, children are particularly adept at memorization. Young children learn songs, rhymes, and recite facts with relative ease. Because young children are so eager to memorize that they will make up non-sensical playground rhymes, we challenge them by providing substantial subject matter for them to memorize. Each subject has its own grammar. In science, children memorize facts about nature. In math, children memorize times tables. In Latin, teachers emphasize vocabulary. Throughout each year in Grammar School, classically educated children learn the factual foundation of each subject. We use songs, chants, and rhymes to help children enjoy the learning experience.

Logic – Grades 7-8

The Logic phase involves ordering facts into organized statements and arguments. During the middle school years, children are beginning to think independently. They often develop a propensity for argument. Classical education teaches children in this phase to argue well. The study of formal logic helps students understand the fundamentals of a good argument. Practice in making written and oral arguments helps to further develop these skills. Teachers encourage the use of argumentation in each subject. Again, each subject has its own logic. In science, we use the development and testing of hypothesis. In math, we develop a student’s ability to logically orient numbers through the more abstract concepts of algebra and trigonometry.

Rhetoric – Grades 9-12

Rhetoric is the art of communicating well. Once a student has obtained a knowledge of the facts (grammar) and developed the skills necessary to arrange those facts into arguments (logic), he must develop the skill of communicating those arguments to others (rhetoric). During the high school years, students become concerned with what others think of them. Classical education helps students develop their minds to think and articulate concepts to others. Writing papers, researching, and orating ideas are skills required in all subjects. Ambrose adds polish to these skills to create a well-rounded student who can communicate effectively. We leverage these skills through the final requirement of the defense of a senior thesis.

While each component has a primary focus during a particular phase, all skills are developed during all levels. A second grader will develop certain skills in logic and rhetoric. A high school student will still acquire extensive knowledge in specific subjects. Emphasis is simply placed on different phases during different ages."

If you know of any group that follows that educational philosophy (particularly focused on the grammar stage (memorizing) since my kids are young and in that stage), please let me know. If you might be interested in forming such a group, please let me know as well as I would consider that if I am unable to find an existing group.

Thanks a bunch!

Severine

classical education

hey,I am Melissa, mom to Xander (8 yrs old but he plays really well with younger children). First welcome back to Montreal! I know of only 4 "groups" in mtl (i'm sure there are others); this one (based out of a community centre in St. henri), a christian group on the west island (again based out of a community centre in prerrefonds i think), a french group (see the links on here; based around a yahoo group; nice to anglos), and an unschooling group (still getting up and going but have had a couple of meetings). I'd be happy to meet up either for a group or just to hang. We are new to homeschooling but have been kinda lurking for a couple of years within the community. We are so far pretty eclectic and figuring out what works for Xander. Xander hates repetition so I tend to shy away from classical education. I do though like the "first language lessons for the well-trained mind" by Jessie Wise. I just tone down her repetition. It has a very sensical method to learning grammar which i liked cause well i am terrible at it and never learned it in school. It's also very oral which seems to work well for Xander. I'm always interested in learning more about well anything so i'd be very interested in meeting up to learn more about how you use classical education.Anyway I know another homeschooling family (3 and 6) in pointe st charles that my son spends the day with on wednesdays (when i work) so i'll let her know another hsing family moved in. :)As of Oct. 1 we will be living in NDG.

Hi Melissa, Sorry I did not

Hi Melissa, Sorry I did not get back to you right away. We had family visiting with us until yesterday. Thanks for the run-down of the homeshool groups you are aware of. That is helpful! I'm looking at getting together with the other mom who responded (Ana) who also lives in NDG (I actually grew up there) so let me know if you're interested in meeting up as well. The more the merrier!Take care,Severinewww.hazelaid.com All natural, hazelwood & Baltic amber necklaces that relieve eczema, reflux, teething pain, migraines, etc. We have Soap Nuts too! Thanks for responding!

Hi Ana,Forming one would definitely be the next best thing to joining one (though maybe involving a bit more work :). I'm not entirely sure what it would look like exactly thogh I have some ideas. Let me see if I can't locate a classical homeshool group located somewhere else (via the wonderful thing we call the internet :) and pick their brains for some suggestions of how to proceed. I have family in town for the next couple of weeks but I'll try to get started on the research and maybe we can connect in later Sept. after our guests are gone. Does that work for you? We live in Pointe St Charles...what about you? My email address is severine dot 3 at gmail dot com. Feel free to contact me whenever. Yeh, this could be exciting! Love that our kids are of similar ages...that makes things a lot easier (and more fun for them!).Severinewww.hazelaid.com All natural, hazelwood & Baltic amber necklaces that relieve eczema, reflux, teething pain, migraines, etc. We have Soap Nuts too!
