Concrete music and sound objects

Offered by: homeschooling parent Sean

Class 2 of 2: Continued from last week, children will do a sonic show & tell where they show the objects that they have brought. As they make sounds with their objects, I will record them and they will be imported into a computer. This phase may require a short break while I quickly do the editing. Then we will try to create a piece of concrete music collectively by deciding what sounds go best with others and by creating, for example, a foreground, middleground and background. We will also try to decide what the form should be. For example, should the piece start quietly and get louder, or the opposite? Should there be a high point followed by a fade-out or should it end with a bang? Should the piece be a kind of story, or should it be a more abstract arrangement of sounds? We will try different possibilities and decide which ones work best. If time permits, we may also look into different ways of processing sounds (reversing, time stretching, filtering, etc.)
