Offered by: homeschooling mom Christine Bieri Geography workshops: There is a whole world out there to explore and read about. I propose a 4 week Geography workshop where the kids will get to pick out a country or region and develop it according to their own skill level and interest. As the weeks progress, we will go over the 5 continents during the workshops, going over the major facts about them and the countries that make them up. After the first week, the children participating will be asked to present which country they chose and why, along with what it is about it that they found interesting enough to grab their attention. This workshop requires parent participation in between actual classroom time, as your children will likely need either library time or internet access to do some research. Parents are welcome to participate in the workshop as well, though the idea is to let the kids do most of the participating so that they can present their ideas; so parents, keep the topics within your child's comfort zone. Presentations can be as straighforward as the flag of the country coloured by your child and a few interesting details, or making a model of the dwelling space the locals use, or a full blown facts and figures presentation including population, altitudes, lakes and rivers, etc... The children decide according to their interest and capacity. We are happy to hear whatever they want to share. Materials required: We will have some books available (atlas, world book, magazines, etc..) and feel free to bring in whatever your children might find interesting. Drawing supplies, coloured pens, etc... to start working on the presentations. Bristle board can be a great medium for this kind of presentation as the kids can draw the outline of the country and then tack on the things they want to talk about and it is easily rolled up for transportation. When: Tuesday mornings, March 2, 9, 23 and 30. Where: Room 129 at Centre Communidée Signing up: This activity is limited to 12 kids. Please sign up on the March 2 session.
