2nd Annual Homeschooler involvement in the G.M.A.A./HALO ROAD RACE

The Halo is a very popular annual event that has been held on Mount Royal beside Beaver Lake for over 25 years.  Everyone had a FANTASTIC time last year!

The History of the Event & Rules:

Hosted by the Greater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA), which now has over 4500 runners taking over Mount Royal each year.  4000 of these are from 78 elementary schools and as of last year, one homeschool group.  It is a great day for the kids and is loaded with fun as they run, play, and interact with others.  All cheer on others and encourage them along, elementary or high school age.  Even those from other schools they do not know.

Each individual must accept responsibility for safeguarding his/her property.  You must allow a 2 1/2 hour time frame in order to race.

OBJECTIVES: To emphasize mass participation and to introduce the concept of competing in sports, therefore no champions declared.

UNIFORM: Students must wear a t-shirt of the same colour with the school name on it.  The school name must be visible at all times.

SPORTSMANSHIP: Fair play and good sportsmanship must be shown at all times by all participants.

RACE CATEGORIES:

Medical Examination Report: Only students who have been MEDICALLY EXAMINED and classified as fit for all physical activities or have parental permission to participate may be permitted to participate in activities of the GMAA Association.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AGE categories:

Cycle 2 students (grades 3 & 4) - 1km race, which is a bit strenuous as the first part of the race is uphill.  Athletic/active children born Jan 2000 to Sept 2001 may participate and run in the grade 3 age category.

Cycle 3 students (grades 5 & 6) - 2km race, which requires some endurance.

HIGH SCHOOL AGE categories:

Juvenile: Born in 1991, 92, 93 - 5km race

Midget: Born Oct 1st 1993 to Sept 30th 1995 - 4km race

Bantam: Born Oct 1st 1995 to Sept 30th 1997 - 2km race

NB: Students may race in an older age category.  Please note the distance of the race increases the higher the age category.  Be sure you students are fit and capable of running longer distances.
