intro

O.K....new at this--- what's the difference between a 'tag' and the subject?
My name is Nina, and I live in the country with my husband and two kids,( boys), aged almost five and seven and a half. We are unschooling, and loving it. (As long as I don't get in the way.....)
What I don't know ( where do I begin?) are the rules and regs of homeschooling in Quebec. People have been so kind as to send me links to various websites which probably hold this information, but when I go on my hunting expeditions, this info seems to elude me. So I am choosing to expose my inabilities here for all to see, and just ask: I have heard there is mandatory testing for kids at certain ages/levels...who knows about this? Also, since we haven't registered with any school board, I consider us under the radar... does this have any bearing?
What else, what else? I am really glad to have finally found a few forums in which to include myself, and to share in other's stories and experiences. I am, however, very new to the cyber world, and feel like I am fumbling into a whole new world. I hope I can figure out how to navigate through and hear from you---whoever you may be.
over & out for now...Nina

under the radar

Under the radar is the very best place to be, IMHO. I have never registered with the school board as there is no advantage to doing so. My advice, from my nearly 20 years of unschooling, is to stay under the radar and to do whatever you like.

hi Nina

The subject is like the title, and the tag(s) are to help organize the information for later look-up - like when searching intros or legal questions or unschooling.

If you want to fill out your profile, go to My account (left sidebar). That's kind of where people can find each other, based on their location and the ages of their kids...

As for your legal questions, from what I understand it goes like this: the law requires that you offer your kids an educational experience equivalent to the one offered by public schools, as evaluated by a school board. So you're supposed to register with your local school board, and come to some agreement with them. Some people sign contracts and agree to regular testing, others negotiate portfolio-type assessments, third-party evaluations, or I don't know what other arrangements. While my kids are still too young to be registered, from what I've heard it often brings more hassle than support...

School kids are subjected to provincial testing throughout their school years, but it doesn't really count until grades 10 and 11. (Before that, results are only used to place kids in advanced, regular, or bobo maths, English, etc.) I don't know much about what kids need to get into Cegep or university yet, but we both have some time to figure that out!

If you "get caught" not being registered anywhere (unlikely but possible, usually through some angry family member), then you'll simply be asked to register. Ignoring their request might result in no further action from them, or they might insist. Then you're on to coming to an agreement, etc. Social services won't care much unless your kids are being neglected or mistreated.

All this is from what I've heard, most of it at AQED's symposium last year, some of it from parents with first-hand experience.

Hope that helps,
Sonya

posted a site for you under

posted a site for you under the Curricula forum, too, but then I was just thinking that you're unschooling, no? We are going to have an eclectic approach with unschooling emphasis so I will use the site in the other post to draw up a "curriculum" that will satisfy the board, but we will not be moving pubic school into our home.
Great to see you here!
