Hello Everyone,
I stumbled on this site recently and I am very pleased to have become it's newest member!!! I must say that it is very reassuring to have found a group in the Montreal area discussing homeschooling. I am new to homeschooling my own children but the concept is something I embraced many years ago while I was a student and especially when I worked in the higher levels of the educational system. I always knew that I would homeschool when the time came. Well...the time has come (fairly quickly) and now I'm entering the next stage...actually getting it done... I have two children, both boys (ages 4 and 3). I havn't completely decided on my curriculum for kindergarden but right now my eldest is using the whole Rod & staff series which I think are just great for pre-K. After that, I am leaning towards homeschooling as an umbrella school. Not sure yet! I have been told by a few veteran homeschoolers and through my research on the topic that it might be a safer choice because of our provincial regulations. Does anybody in the group have experience with using a curriculum from a private home school through correspondence? (i.e. Seton, Kolbe etc...) I realize that many of you unschool...Is that because its more of your teaching styles or is it because it better suites your children? I am less familiar with unschooling and would love to hear more about it from your own experiences...Lastly, has homeschooling caused any of you personally problems with a school board?.. Thank you for any advice you may offer and hope to hear from you all at one point...
Regards to everyone,
Tania & family
p.s. Thank you to Sonya for the warm welcome!
Welcome!
Hi Tania,
Welcome to Homeschooling! I have not any experiences with schoolboards, my kids (boys 7 and 5, girl 20mo) have never been to school.
We definitely are more unschooling (Ithink) than traditional homeschooling, in that the boys really decide what they want to focus us on and I am just a guide for them. They do a lot of storytelling and story writing, we use the internet a lot for research, and read a lot of books, and use video games. I integrate math and political science into our everyday lives (so you have $x and you want to buy this that costs $y. Do you have enough, did you consider the taxes, etc..) I do propose a lot of more structured activities, and we have tons of workbooks that they work in when they are motivated to do so.
I find that for me, there are so many advantages of being with the kids, seeing them flourish and learn all sorts of things, and not just "age-appropriate" things, etc... homeschooling was the way to go.
I do have moments where I feel we "should be doing" something...so I do a math sheet, or we practice some vocabulary and then I get over it and we keep going!
Good luck!
Christine :)
