Petition to support homeschoolers in the UK

Posted by Raquel:

I am copying this to as many unschooling groups as I can find, in order to ask for your collective help.

Here in England, UK, unschooling is very much being threatened, to the point of extinction.

I have created a global petition so we can show our government that homeschoolers around the world are united against this action:

http://www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/support-homeschoolers-in-england.html

The petition explains in more detail the threat we are facing. But basically, they want to register us (being able to reject or revoke our registration as they see fit), they want to interview our children ALONE, and they want us to have a 12 month educational plan and follow it.

We would very much appreciate the support of your members,

With best wishes,

Raquel Toney

UK Activism as an Example for Quebec Homeschoolers

I don't know if anyone has looked more deeply into this issue, but what the UK homeschoolers are doing in reaction to the Badman Review is an inspiration. They are lobbying their MP's, making use of FOIP requests to obtain statistics on the frequency with which homeschooled children are being referred for investigation by their youth authority, and they have written their own brief that addresses many of the points Badman puts forward.

I think those of us who disagree with the way the law is applied in Quebec, ought to keep a close eye on what's happening in the UK now & think about following their example. We need to pull together if we want to make a change. I know that isn't necessarily a priority for those who are "under the radar" - and probably there are those who are concerned that any activism could jeopardize their anonymity or draw more attention to their family after having fought off the YP. Obviously this risk exists, but the other side of the coin is the possibility of public awareness and actual justice for homeschooled kids and their families....

Cheers!
