Montreal homelearners have been meeting on Thursdays since last March. We have been using this time to just hang out together, without a planned activity, but perhaps we can also begin doing projects during this time.
We spent the summer in different parks throughout the city, but now the weather is starting to turn chilly.
So as of October 2nd, our Thursdays are moving indoors to room 428 at the MAI (Montreal Arts Interculturels), located at 3680 Jeanne Mance (near Prince Arthur).
The building is an old school. The room is large with big windows and the option to bring out tables and chairs. (I would wish for some soft surfaces as well, so I'll try to find some mats or something.) We can eat in there (I don't know how practical it would be to bring a packed lunch, or how comfortable it would be to eat it there, but we can if we want to, or we can just have snacks). There is no sink in the room but there is a bathroom down the hall. We can keep a bin there, for our stuff, whatever that may be... : )
I've reserved the room for 4 hours a week, from 12 noon until 4pm, every Thursday until mid-December, just to see how it goes. It only costs $10/hour (!!), so the total bill is $440 plus taxes. To recover the cost, I will be asking for people to either buy a membership or to pay a drop-in fee.
So, for Thursdays in October to mid-December (11 weeks), from noon until 4pm
Membership: $40 per family for the 11 weeks
or
Drop-in fee: $5 per family per week that they come.
I would prefer it if people buy a membership, because it is more secure for me : ) If you want the option of having a place to go and hang out with other homeschoolers, then this is a place to consider investing! (As many of you already know, I hope to eventually get a space that is ours 24/7, so this is a small experiment to see if our commitment is getting there... )
All that being said, no family will be turned away if they can't pay the fee.
I think the pricing is about right to break even-ish, but if I find that I am raking in the dough with lots of members and drop-ins, I will save the extra money for the group and lower the prices next session (January until park weather starts again).

Thursdays
What will the children be doing? Will there be activities organized or will they just be able to organize themselves? Should they bring playthings to share? I am just trying to envision the afternoon.
Thursdays
Our Thursdays in the park were just for hanging out together, without a planned activity. In a classroom, I have a feeling that ideas and projects will start popping up before too long, since running around will be limited. I am going to wait for suggestions to come from others, preferably the kids : )
re: Thursday get-togethers are moving indoors!
Excellent news, thanks for arranging this, Sonya. We're going for a family membership as well.
