Teams of up to six, 6 to 9 year olds will participate in the 2010 Body Forward Challenge "to explore the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives."

Over a 6-week course, participants will create a Show-Me poster which illustrates their research and team journey. They will also create a Lego Model representing a medical tool or machine which incorporates a simple machine and a moving part.

Using the book "Little Big Minds" by Marietta McCarty as a guide, Jackie will be facilitating a philosophy discussion group. Participants will develop critical thinking and communication skills as they contemplate and discuss abstract topics such as friendship, responsibility and happiness. The perspective of several philosophers will be presented and discussed. McCarty has used this format with children as young as 5, so this group will be open to all participants.

Magic Tree House Book Club

This book club is geared toward the younger kids, 5-10, will use the Magic Treehouse/La Cabane Magique books by Mary Pope Osborne to spark conversation.  Jackie will lead a guided discussion and present activities based on the following books:

September 7 - "Buffalo Before Breakfast" (Great Plains of the 1800s),

Physics: Real Science-4-Kids Pre-Level 1

This series of 10 classes will cover the basics of physics: force, work, energy, electrons, magnets and light and sound waves.  Each class will include about 10 minutes of lecture, followed by a hands-on experiment which follows the scientific method and a brief recap of our findings. Older students may choose to complete a laboratory workbook (available for purchase from www.gravitaspublications.com), while younger students and others may participate orally.  This course was designed for the K-3 level and is open to children 5 and up.

Il y aurait possibilité d'avoir des cours de musique en semaine au Conservatoire de McGill à Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue si nous réussissons à avoir un assez grand groupe.  Les cours sont d'une durée de 45 minutes à titre de 1 professeur pour 8 élèves.  Le coût est de 344$ taxes et frais d'enregistrement inclus.  

Montreal Live Steamers - Steam trains!

All homeschoolers are welcome to join us for some miniature steam engine fun! Wednesday August 18th, from 10am at Montreal Live Steamers in Les Cedres (about 45 minutes West of Montreal - see map below).  Learn about steam engines and take a ride on a miniature train!

Homeschoolers soccer

A few families have started playing soccer on Wednesday evenings in Somerled park in NDG (corner Hingston).  The kids are aged about 4-9 and the game is pretty "free-form" - basically parents and kids kicking and running and having fun : )

Exceptionally, we will play on Thursday evening this week.  Next week until the end of summer: back to Wednesdays.

Here is another great find that I wanted to share: Khan Academy.  Over 1400 videos in which Sal Khan teaches everything from basic arithmetic to algebra, differential equations, chemistry, biology, finance, and more.  Free!  A lot of people really like his teaching style - he's won awards and all...
