Film screening: Summerhill

05/20/2010 - 19:00

As part of the Festival of Anarchy, the Montreal Rad School presents "Summerhill".

Imagine a school where you don't have to go to lessons, you make all the rules yourself and climbing trees and building boats are definitely part of the curriculum.  That school exists.  It's called Summerhill and it has been there for 70 years.  Maddy and Ryan attend Summerhill and find it changes them in ways they would never imagine.  But then when inspectors decide the school must close, Maddy and Ryan join forces with staff and pupils in a battle that goes to the very heart of the Government.  Based on a true story, Summerhill is an enchanting drama that will captivate everyone.

Film screening: The War on Kids

05/13/2010 - 19:00

As part of the Festival of Anarchy, the Montreal Rad School presents "The War on Kids".

This film exposes the many ways the public school system has failed children by robbing students of all freedoms due largely to irrational fears.  Children are subjected to endure prison-like security, arbitrary punishments, and pharmacological abuse.  Schools not only fail to educate students, but the drive to teach has become secondary to the need to control kids.

Nourri-Source garage sale fundraiser

Posted by Rowan:

As some of you already know, I volunteer for an organization called Nourri-Source. We help out new mums and babies who are having a hard time breastfeeding and need a little knowledge, love, and encouragement to go the distance. We are always in need of funding in order to train new volunteers, and keep the old ones up-to-date on the latest research. Last summer we had a lot of success with a multi-family garage sale we had in NDG and so we're doing the same again on Saturday May 15th.

We need stuff to sell. If you are doing some late spring or summer cleaning and you have a few items you would otherwise bring to the Salvation Army, for instance, please give them to us instead! I'm starting to collect things now, so anytime you want to rid yourself of this clutter, call or email me and we’ll arrange something!

"Scientists know that children learn best by putting experiences together in new ways.  They construct knowledge; they don't swallow it."
